I have been teaching linguistics for the last 20 years or so, and I have taught at the universities of Bonn, Düsseldorf, Osnabrück, Santiago de Compostela, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Catania, Thessaloniki, Athens and Dalian. In my teaching, I find the traditional socratic method in combination with hands-on analyses most effective and enjoyable. Please click here for a current list of courses. I have also written some textbooks on Synchronic English Linguistics and Understanding Language Change (with Kate Burridge). For these, check out Publications.
Since 1999 I have published more than 50 papers in prestigious international journals and edited volumes. I have edited a handful of volumes myself, including Constructions and Language Change (2008, with Gabriele Diewald) and the multi-volume English Historical Linguistics (2012/2017, with Laurel Brinton). I have also authored several research monographs and textbooks, including Social Networks and Historical Sociolinguistics (2005) and Understanding Language Change (2016, with Kate Burridge).
